Amazon RDS Aurora can helpfully store your credentials in the console via AWS Secrets Manager. Surprise! It costs 40¢ per month to store the creds.

If their underpants store division pulled the same thing:

When people say you should "own your own data", or that the future of the web is "ownership", what does that mean?

We need to talk about digital ownership.

Low-Tech Magazine explores techniques of the past and combines them with the knowledge of today to propose more sustainable futures.

Based on this idea, Kris de Decker and Roel Roscam Abbing organize an evening exploring concepts from the Internet's history that can help create a more sustainable future internet. With talks by Kris De Decker, @rra and @timrodenbroeker

How about systems where independent publishers could own their platform? Or what about media where you actually get to see posts from those you follow?

The evening will start with short talks and then make space for a larger discussion and chats over a drink. Are you curious what fresh ideas from the past can tell us about the future and who are the people working on them? Join us at #Akasha Hub in #Barcelona on the 21st of February.

oh interesting a Fedora based linux gaming distro. I kind had to dig around looking for articles what other distros there are. I wonder if it would be valuable to expose that more prominently

very good, this thing is one of the most interesting piece of hardware on the handheld market. Don't want to have to run Windows on it though 😫

i don’t even understand what causes an american to go “hey, my life would be better with a ute. they don’t sell them here so i will just buy some junk cars from the salvage auction and combine them into a working homemade ute.”
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

is it “a ute?”

is it “an ute?”

can somebody from australia or south america where these things come from explain

in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

ironically while gassing up this monstrosity we saw an actually imported mitsubishi ute. sadly i did not grab a picture, but basically a ute is like a pickup truck but built on a passenger car platform, and they tend to be smaller than a pickup truck.
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

Traditionally yes, it'd be something like this but as local car manufacturing has completely vanished you'll often hear people call things like a Hilux a ute, along with the more recent addition in our markets those giant US style pickup trucks like the F250.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@BrodieOnLinux F250 isn’t even the stylish one, that’s the F150. the models above that are meant to be stripped down and customized as heavy equipment.
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

I don't know these weird US trucks, I hate them, they don't fit in our car parks and always end up needing 2 spaces, the only point I was bringing up is nowadays basically anything with a bed is called a ute

This is such a cool video! Yes, it's about juggling, but it is even more about the history of animation and all the many times juggling was portrayed. Good fun!

I have just made my first-ever contribution to KDE fixing a bug that affects me personally.

Thanks so much to @BrodieOnLinux, @justin, and a KWin dev for helping me get this far. As a legally blind person who relies on KWin's zoom feature to use a PC at all, it really means a lot.

in reply to Justin

An issue fixed for me is an issue fixed for potentially hundreds of people who don't have the same voice I do. So I'm interested.

Just having the ability to highlight text and send it to something like speech-dispatcher would be helpful for me.

Also a Breeze OLED dark theme would be nice. Black backgrounds are always better than dark gray, but a traditional High Contrast theme is too much and too ugly for me.

in reply to Ritchie

I've asked in our Accessibility channel to see if we can find you a liaison that is happy to chat via Discord to make it easier for you. In the interim, I found this link which lists some of the issues we are facing for accessibility in KDE: invent.kde.org/teams/accessibi…
