Our second astronomical gift is … two giant bubbles!
With the Fermi spacecraft, scientists found out that our Milky Way galaxy is blowing bubbles — two of them! Each bubble is about 25,000 light-years tall and glows in gamma rays. tmblr.co/Zz_Uqj2dMNkMX

It's insane how big space is. I can't really understand it. And the fact that the light we are seeing from all these distant galaxies is billions of years old.

1968—Douglas Engelbart demonstrates the oN-Line System (NLS), The Mother of All Demos

The Mother of All Demos is a name given retrospectively to Douglas Engelbart's December 9, 1968, demonstration of experimental computer technologies that are now commonplace.

The live demonstration featured the introduction of the computer mouse, video conferencing, teleconferencing, hypertext, word processing, hypermedia, object addressing and dynamic file linking, bootstrapping, and a collaborative real-time editor.

Take it from a Mars rover: pushing past obstacles takes determination. Know a student who’s #gotperseverance? My team wants to celebrate them with a message from Mars and a live chat from mission control. Nominate by Dec. 19!

Not a bad analysis of media manipulation. My only note would be he is over harsh on Wikipedia. Sometimes the information waters are muddied on that service, but they have plenty of systems in place to correct misinformation and dysinformation. They are still a reasonable first stop for finding useful resources. Just like any encyclopedia.

Wikipedia has LOTS of checks and balances these days, and I am a supporter of their work (my wife and I made our annual financial donation to them a few weeks ago to keep the servers running etc.).

Content warning: linux scheduler hate

i do not like the linux scheduler

it's apparently so much more advanced than the plan9 one

but on plan9 you could legit execute a fork bomb and things would run fairly smoothly until you run out of procs, and even then things would only partially break.

Content warning: really weird linux bug

hey i'm pretty sure linux processes aren't supposed to be cooperatively scheduled?

i've had an issue recently where if a process enters an infinite loop which doesn't perform a syscall, the whole system just grinds to a halt and i have to do a hard reboot.

when i boot i get a message about firmware bugs and TS_DEADLINE being disabled, may be related?

fedi.9til.de/@binarycat/109481…

is there an actual issue with the old polyam flag besides "i don't like the colors" and "why is pi there"?

yeah you wouldn't necessarily know it was a polyam flag just by looking at it, but that's the case with most pride flags.
