It's about time to try #yearCompass
yearcompass.com/
I tried last year but didn't finish
What I did to was fruitful though
All my friends who I recommended it to enjoyed it too
It takes awhile, so it helps to start early

Year compass helps you reflect and close out your year and prepare for the next

I'm watching a "planning your year" webinar by a local poet and organizer in philly. the recording is private, but I'll share some of the notes here.

To start, reflecting on 2022:
1. What went right?
2. What unexpectedly went right?
3. What goals deserved to be picked up on in 2023?

I think the question about what's unexpected is so good! I like to ask this during my facilitation or project work too. There are a lot of times things happen that are unexpected and noticing them is important to incorporating them to a shift in my worldview and growth.

The last question is an interesting framing as well: what *deserves* to be picked up on, like what has been neglected this past year that is important for you to center in your next?

- Choose goals that align to your values and what you want to work on. People may have expectations about who you are and the kind of work you do. It's ok to say that's not your focus anymore and focus on something that is more of a priority to nurturing yourself now.
- Don't just reflect on the past year, reflect on life pre-pandemic too. Everything is timey-wimey, and every day in the pandemic is historic. I know, personally, my entire academic career would have been different. What from that time are you happy to leave behind? What from that time do you want to bring back?
- Write your goals down. Bring them into physical space. I'd add to consider additional rituals that bring meaning to your life too.
- Your goals can change and be refined. Start with a brain dump, identify themes, break down what feels feasible, what resonates with you know vs. a later you, etc. in line with your reflections from the past year.

- your planning and goals change depending your canvas. want to start small using index cards? want a big cork board? want to write things down in a text editor? all of these will impact your process, and some may feel more generative than others.
- give yourself freebies, things you know that will have a low barrier to entry for you to start to engage with bigger goals you might have, even if they're not as difficult as the "ideal" or "standard". this also gives you flexiblity in changing your priorities to a commitment. knocking them off your list also helps build momentum for getting shit done.

How do you change with the seasons?

1. When do you work best?
2. When are you least productive?
3. Is there a lull in opportunities during the year?

I don't always like to think about productivity but I think thinking about lulls is meaningful. Tbh in my head, there are times where I think there are no lulls, but there are definitely times that are very busy!!

- use the energy that you have about feeling guilty for not showing up for a friend toward the things you can do for them now and going forward. start small, with the simple things, just text them, just drop by, etc.
- factor in people not being on your schedule!!!
- give yourself buffer time before and after event to wind up and wind down for it. (this is a me one)

Victories

1. how do you measure a victory/accomplished a goal (again think about freebies too!)? What does it take for you to be satisifed?
2. How do you celebrate afterwards?
3. Take note of what worked, what didn't, what adjustments were made in the process
4. How does a victory impact the goals for the year? How does it contribute to your momentum?
5. Do you have a defined time or cycle during the year when you re-revaluate?
