So, I've been thinking, if one would want to make a super-cross-platform graphical game targeted at somewhat common platforms, starting from #8bit, what would be the common denominator for the art?

The answer would probably be 160x128x1bpp as a baseline. Small enough to be displayed on #GameBoy, crisp enough for #ZXSpectrum, pretty enough for #GameBoyAdvance.

that's an interesting puzzle, I think about this sort of stuff a lot. Gameboy is a good target size for this sort of hardware. I tend to use the GBA as my bare minimum size.
