Hey, I've tweaked how the front page of @kottke works by inlining the Quick Links into the main flow with the "main" posts. Click through for a brief explanation if you're interested. Feedback welcome! kottke.org/23/01/some-design-n…

: this is very kind of you, but I only read your blog via RSS. The way that the Quick Links work is pretty mysterious to me...

hmm. I’m someone who used the links in the box, but I like the idea of inlining them too. I can see *why* you chose that intermediate font size (they’re not headings (it’s your mini-comentary on the link); and body-text-size would get lost), but it does… look a bit odd. #NotADesigner

excellent change!
Much easier to see if there’s new links since the last time.
Some notes:
1. It’s a quick aside, but it doesn’t look like a link.
Maybe a google search result (ad) style?
“Quick link: bla bla bla · Quick link archive”
(Or even just a header-rainbow coloured “Q” instead of “Quick link:”)
2. Link to archive / more quick links on every link?
3. Font size difference is not very pronounced. Maybe same size, but different background colour?

I know how hard it is to find time to redesign old sites… good luck with this!

Hadn't thought about it that way, but they do look like ads. That said, once you know that the Quick Links are inlined, it's good that they are visually distinct. I assume this means that the 2x/day QL push won't be happening? Overall, an improvement IMO.
