The Price! Of Zines! Is TOO DAMN HIGH!

Spurred by my encounter with a $20 zine at a Milwaukee bookshop, "The Price of Zines is Too Damn High" is my antagonization of boutique zinester culture. It argues in favor or a return to the roots of zines as a noncommercial means of expression and communication for marginalized communities and crews.

(It's also the first time I've collaged and hand-written a #zine for quite a while... it was fun! and it has lotsa #cats too)

The cover shows the words THE PRICE OF ZINES IS TOO DAMN HIGH in permanent marker collaged over an angry looking furry, white whiskered tortie cat, who seems to me to be the feline version of the "rent is too damn high guy", the black political candidate and frequent meme image from NYC with a bald head and snow white sideburns beard and mustache, who is poking out from the bottom of the page. Pink and yellow price stickers with outrageous prices dot the empty space, including one that says "$ not paying that".
Back of the zine shows a gray cat in a party hat with various notes collaged on top, including admonitions to "do not pay for this zine!", a photocopied blurb that says "we all deserve to drop $100 on zines then head to the vegan burger joint as a little treat" and a larger note saying this was an ACTUAL DOODLE from the 2024 midwest q/t zine fest prooo flyer, and the ethic i intend to relentlessly antagonize inside the zine

Next to a gray shorthair cat doing a blep (sticking out its tongue), i have changed the cover of Seth Tobocman's classic graphic book "You don't have to fuck people over to survive", with stenciled lettering and a stenciled image of a grotesque monster or something like that? (i'm not quite sure) to say, "You don't have to charge a lot for zines to survive".

Do you think artists who charge $10-20+ for zines bemoan people like me? Are they like “why do they let in these riff raft who give away zines free or cheap into the zine fest??? They’re hurting our sales!”
