Some would say the ability to respond and adapt to change is indicative of intelligence. On the individual level I'd say that's true, whether it can be applied to whole species I have doubts, since in my view intelligence is a characteristic of individuals only. For instance, an intelligent ant eater (which as a species are supposed to be utterly dim) may well survive an average human (which as a species define the apex of evolution on earth).
@Birne Helene if you're interested in the subject, i followed this course recently . Very good channel with a doctor in place. Intelligence is a factor, but not a predominant one.
