MAJOR NEWS: EU ministers have this week passed the landmark Platform Work Directive (#PWD) following lengthy trilogue discussions between the Council, Parliament, and the Commission.

This is the first legislation in the EU that regulates the use of algorithmic management in digital labour platforms, affecting the working conditions and labour rights of over 28.5 million European gig economy workers.

Among other provisions, this directive will ensure that 🧵:

1. Workers are informed about the use of automated monitoring and decision-making (ADM) in their recruitment, working conditions and earnings;

2. Platforms are banned from using automated monitoring or ADM systems for processing certain types of personal data on platform workers, such as biometric or psychological data; and

3. Human oversight and evaluation must be guaranteed in processes involving automated decisions, and workers have the right to have those decisions explained and reviewed.

The PWD is long in the making, and its passing marks a momentous step for (1) the #labour rights of digital platform workers and (2) recognising the significance of human intervention in algorithmic monitoring and decision-making.

Member states will have 2 years to incorporate the provisions of the directive into their national legislation. It's about time policy supports platform workers!
