my photo backups are gone after my Nextcloud had some sort of hiccup and fails to decrypt half of my files.

They're only private when you physically own and control the media, or when they're E2EE. Hosted Nextcloud doesn't by itself suffice, unfortunately.

Yeah, the NextCloud solution is great until… your iOS NextCloud client de-auths every few months and after re-login the auto upload is disabled, you have to configure it again and guess what was the last photo synced and do a boring manual sync.
