my late uncle, a world class pianist who gave his last solo concert at 99, assess his performances not on his playing, but on the energy he felt from the audience. He played in some of the world’s finest halls, sometimes with the world’s great symphonies, sometimes giving a world premiere, say of Aaron Copland. After playing in a small, sold-out theater on his 95th birthday—some in the audience had come from as far as Australia—“that may have been my finest performance.”
