"Please stop making these movies with dark lighting and inconsistent volume . I literally cannot see a thing. I cannot hear what anyone is saying. I stopped watching a lot of new movies because of this."

Movies with strong color filters when framing other countries

Movies are subject to corporate fashion like anything else. My hated fashion in movies is the ubiquitous US currency green color wash. It worked in the Matrix and sequels because that's the point of the series. The rest though? Farking wealthy corporate animals who get their initiative from trade mags and investors.

I've seen it said on a Reddit thread that with some movies mixed for Dolby 5.1 or 7.1, and some televisions, the center channel goes missing and the dominant sounds are music, special effects, and only the front ambience of the dialog channel, without the clearest part of the dialog. That might explain how some things like the Lord of the Rings movies on HBO sound. I have not verified this.
in reply to Muse

@Brian Fitzgerald I have seen something along those lines as well, and whatever the reason, the description matches what I'm hearing (or not hearing).
in reply to Muse

I've also seen it said that 3db of compression would lift the available dialog level to something more audible. Accomplishing that would be very impractical for most folks. I'll poke around in the menus for my tv and cable box searching for any options that mention Dolby that may be set inappropriately.
in reply to Muse

@Brian Fitzgerald Regardless of the explanation, IMO, it's insane to take an earnest production that so many people contributed their lives to in every way to bring to life then render it unappealing to the audience by an indifferent mix that only profits the Dolby people.

"What is something from back in your day that you sorely miss?"

Democracy.

A lot of the problem with how movies sound outside of theaters is that TVs do or don't support something called Dynamic Sound. I forget which way causes the problem.
in reply to Muse

I guess my old dumb TV that friends gave to me free of cost (thank you!) has two speakers in the back of it. I still have to turn the volume down/up constantly and enable closed captions so the loud parts don't bother my neighbors while I get the gist of the scene (CC is usually an utter cesspool of inaccuracy - a filthy joke punching down on hearing impaired.)

I'm tired of (IMO) parasitic institutions that are only interested in focusing on exploiting the wealthy.

This morning, I changed my Spectrum cable box from using Dolby Digital to HDMI audio output. I'm hoping this will be better for hearing dialog with modern movies on my TV. We shall see.
in reply to Muse

Oh, I do have Dynamic Sound enabled on the TV, btw.
in reply to Muse

I'm watching some of Return of the King and things seem better. The special effects and music are somewhat less explosive and the dialog can be heard better without riding the volume control, but my old ears would prefer just a little less dynamic range than what remains. My verdict is, it is worth checking to see if anything is currently enabled because it sounds fancier in the menu instead of auditioning each choice to see how pleasing it is with various content. Mrs F is telling me that volume differences in dialog and effects are now less extreme than they were. Her hearing is better than mine. When she is ,pre satisfied, I am too.
in reply to Muse

I did the same/similar on my TV and it does seem better. My hearing is currently a bit off because of allergy season, but it was a definite improvement.

Sometimes, when I blow my nose, my hearing improves - a sure sign of allergy season. 😉

in reply to Muse

blowing makes mine worse—yawning sometimes makes it better

or drinking something warm

If I'm feeling a little off, I just check my glasses. If they are covered in pollen, usually that's why! I've also discovered that pollen induced vulvitis is a thing. Fun times!
in reply to Muse

The hearing is sort of a pressure thing. Sometimes they will "pop" and I can hear better.

There are lymph glands located at the inner thighs (and armpits and neck) that I suppose could become inflamed during an allergic reaction to pollen or mold. I wonder if gently massaging them would improve their drainage and reduce the histamine load from allergens. Again, dunno.
