Even army of one developer shops can do micro-payments to libraries they use and like and we should. It's a hodgepodge for sure and it'd be great if there was a more direct market mechanism to achieve the same thing but there isn't.

Absolutely we can, and I’ve been promoting that since at least Heartbleed times when I did realize that is a problem. Personally I’m contributing through Liberapay to a number of projects I use, and recently also exploring GitHub Sponsors.

@kravietz 🦇 Of course it'd be great if the big 5-10 companies spread the wealth it bit more too. Yes they contribute a ton of hours to open source, which I very much applaud. But like with Heartbleed, as you highlighted, they know there are vast swaths of necessary libraries that they aren't making for developers are being even partially funded to maintain. <sarcasm>I know! We should make all FOSS development happen on the blockchain and then every time it's used a crypto transaction has to be exchanged for it to work! Web3 to the rescue! </sarcasm>
