Linux unlocked a world of computing where I'm in full control and everything imaginable is suddenly possible, and that felt like a breath of fresh air after a long time of closed source computing/software with that desktop OS that shall not be named
Thanks to linux, I feel like my computer is really mine and not belonging to some corporation that can decide what you can or can not do with and on it. Even-though I used FOSS before I was using linux, it truly opened the gates and now I use 99 % FOSS everywhere (on phone as well).
gave me a fun and cheaper alternative to windows in 1995, got me a job in IT in 1999, kept my sanity in face of a tsunamu of advertising pretending to be operating systems, keeps me occupied now I'm retired. Has been a friend for 29 years.
It gave me server and programming tools I would otherwise not have access to (for more than 120 days) to learn and assess as well as a secure desktop and learned a lot about how computers actually work.

Unknowingly at the time that reignited my passion for tech and soon after I started my web biz that supported me for 15 years.
Props to all the distros but especially Mint that has been my rock solid desktop and dev environment for all these years.
