Rethink what “fragmented” really means for Linux and why it matters.

So maybe stop using an idiotically incorrect word to refer to the situation.

Maybe call it what it is.

DIVERSE.

.@itsfoss The article makes good sense to me. I am glad that there are so many options in the ecosystem. I'd probably be using some other OS entirely if the only option for a GUI was gnome.

This is an optimistic look at Linux fragmentation. However looking at it optimistically doesn't remove the hurdle for developers to write Linux apps. The other day I was thinking about making my app run under Linux. And then I was thinking, wait I have to learn this and that first? Without common standards it's really hard for developers to make their Android apps available on Linux. Otherwise we would have had a Linux phone by now.

What a great article and perspective!
And no AI slop.

Flatpak and KDE apps don't follow the rules that I set for my GTK apps, even simple stuff like window controls on the left. If I install a KDE app it needs to drag in half of the available KDE libraries so I don't use them even if they're better. So my choice is use my preferred gnome and lose apps or use KDE which I don't like.
