after system five was always written in roman letter system V it can only mean
system 500 ( due to 500 services for the smalles Linux ever). However 500 by the romans was a D ( surprised?)

I always assume it was a French reference. "Système D" means that you make it as you can.

D is for "débrouille" implying lake of means and not the best results but a lot of ingeniosity (is it a word? Smart hacks) in the process.
