NASA doesn’t usually allow animals in portraits.

But in 2009, astronaut Leland Melvin snuck his adorable rescue dogs, Jake & Scout, into Johnson #Space Center for his official picture.

In addition to going on 2 space missions, Melvin had been drafted into the NFL. He’s now an advocate for STEAM education & animal welfare. https://www.lelandmelvin.com

Sadly, Jake & Scout passed away, but when Melvin published his 2017 memoir Chasing Space, he chose this wonderful photo for the cover. #HistoryRemix

@engagedlee7 Me too.

Melvin adopted Jake in 2002 after he’d been abused & kept mostly locked in a closet-sized space. Scout wandered into his yard sick & homeless two years later. They made a lovely family.

This seems like reason to share a photo of my rescue pup, Happy. She is from Austin, TX & named herself. Happy is a very good girl. 🐾

I’d love to see & hear about your furry, feathered & scaly family members too. /2

This is Sylvie, one of many rescues from TX, peacefully resting during a Lunar New Year gathering yesterday. Her only flaw is that she is too precious

This is one of my rescue dogs, Cujo. (I didn't name him that, but at the time it fit) He was passed around to several people and somebody apparently really abused him. He was very vicious, biting when you went to reach for him. Scared and felt so unloved. This was his pre-rescue picture.

This is Abby. She's a very smart girl and has been with us for 15 yrs. She's developed a number of health issues, but she's still comfortable and happy.

Lucy, "The Looster". We picked her up from the pound three days before the COVID lockdowns started.

Bella, my friends hand me down dog. Got heatstroke when we went for a joyride and we're stuck in a traffic jam, thought she was done for.

what a wonderful photo! Anybody who loves animals as much as he seems to, has my huge respect. Many #animals give unconditional love

- This is Leland with Mae Jemison and also Julius Montgomery, the first Black man hired at Cape Canaveral; and Morgan Watson, NASA’s first Black engineer. This event was held in 2010 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
