Grand Theft Auto V gets BattlEye anti-cheat, breaks online play on Steam Deck / Linux

Surprisingly, Rockstar have now added BattlEye anti-cheat to Grand Theft Auto V / GTA Online, and sadly it seems they have not enabled the support for Linux desktop and Steam Deck with Valve's Proton. ARTICLE UPDATED.

I certainly won't be playing GTA6 after this. Rockstar will see no money from me going forward after this terrible, horrifically dumb decision. I wish I could refund GTA V on Steam.

I tried to request a refund (as I've seen others do) sinc ethe game is no longer supported on any of my devices. No dice. I love when shitty developers do shitty things.

GTA VI is really far away but they're probably testing BattleEye and how is effective so they can use it or not in GTA VI. But no support for Linux is really dumb

Who wants to bet Microsoft did something "nice" for Rockstar to get them to not enable the anti-cheat on Linux?

@cameronbosch I seriously doubt that, Microsoft's been pretty good on their support of Linux with their games. I think it's more likely that Rockstar didn't wanna bother.

@macoud12 Apparently, though, Valve is trying to work something out with Rockstar to bring back Linux support for GTA Online.

Valve Working With Rockstar to Fix GTA Online on Steam Deck - Steam Deck HQ

GTA Online may be playable on the Steam Deck again in the future, since it seems like Valve is working with Rockstar to possibly fix this.

@macoud12 Maybe they're trying to work something out. Or maybe if they can't, they'll be able to say "we tried to work with Rockstar, but we can't, therefore we'll give some former GTA Online players refunds".
