Lately, the only difference I have really felt is when I run the software manager and search for a program to install. Whether the program I want to install is there or not depends on the distro. There are other small differences that are mostly in the DE or WM that is running.
And they say Linux is "impossibly hard to dev to", because we have "unmanageable fragmentation, killing compatibility" and the occasional "how am I to build for so many targets?"

The only difference I felt was between Debian-based and Arch-based, and even that difference is kinda small.
