Ebola outbreak in DR Congo rages, with 61% death rate & funding running dry

“In the past, the US Agency for International Development, USAID, has provided critical support to respond to such outbreaks. But, with funding cuts and a dismantling of the agency.. health officials fear it will be difficult to compensate for the loss.”

With no way to stop it over there, it will make its way to the United States and kill many people.

In case anyone wonders, the reason Ebola has not caused a pandemic is that the virus is transmitted via bodily fluids, and not airborne, so it can actually be contained. That being said, we should still do everything in our power to contain it wherever it pops up, to save lives.

good things infectious diseases always stay where they started. Like Covid, after Trump pulled the CDC after Wuhan. Nothing bad happened I can remember

I am well aware of the crimes of colonization and their lasting impact, and I am disappointed that the proposed solution is handouts from the US and Europe instead of holding the Congolese government accountable.

Congo's yearly GDP is estimated at 200 billion dollars. I expect world powers to pressure Congo's elite to fund public health at the expense of public corruption.

I don't see Africa healing through arbitrary charity.

Sure, getting ebola would probably kill me if it's allowed to spread unchecked, but I *feel* more scared that a teenager might throw a milkshake in my face if I go around acting like a Nazi, so I want government to focus on keeping me safe from antifa, not ebola.

@briankrebs At least as important has been the past involvement of the US CDC in outbreak suppression globally. USAID has been critical for for support as well but CDC has provided the infectious disease experts.
All past tense.
