I am in my third decade of the Linux desktop. I started with Corel Linux and a boxed set of RedHat. It took a lot of time, a lot of reading, and even more patience to get a working desktop. Once it was finally working properly, the software available wasn't great. Times have changed. Installation is brain-dead simple, there is software for nearly anything you could want (much of it pre-installed), updates are painless, and if you do have a question, there are tons of resources.
I read recently that one of the data points the US government measures is what operating system people use while interacting with US government websites. Linux was about 6% in 2025. It will be interesting to see what that number is at the end of 2026!
all this sylvester hype pretends that each user as customer or employee has a choice to switch his OS. Even on private desktops most users are not free to change decisions. Fact is that quality, costs and sustainability of any OS are not decisive or crucial. Crucial is the network to other relatives, colleagues and customers.
