Basically, any time there's a new way of people talking to each other, some of them immediately use it to flirt, then to date, and as with Torvalds and with me, eventually marry.
People dated via BBSes in the 1980s and even late 1970s; people using multiuser computers in the 1960s and 1970s emailed each other and sometimes dated.
There were commercial "computer dating services" in the 1960s, using the latest high-tech punch cards to figure out who was the best match for who.
