What the dystopia?

Virginia School Board attorneys argued that Abigail Zwerner - the 1st grade teacher shot in her classroom by a 6yo - is not entitled to more than worker’s compensation bc the shooting was “a workplace injury” & “hazard of the job.”

Does anyone wonder why teachers are leaving the field? As if it weren't already dismal enough for them with low pay, having to buy their classroom supplies out of pocket, and dealing with ridiculous antics from parents - and now they have to accept being shot by a 6yo as a regular workplace risk? That's a hell no. I hate this!

so dystopian. 😡 I guess they do actually *want* teachers to leave the profession.

Where, in the curriculum of Masters of Education is the part about "defend yourself from 6yo students with pistols?".

This needs to be pushed to the Supreme Court.

The victim is always to blame or forced to carry the burden in this out of control capitalist nightmare.

Of course the real horror is that it may in some ways be true. And the same could be said for anyone in contact with the public. At some point, someday, someone could decide to just show up and shoot me. Maybe because I've handed out food to the homeless, donated books to the library, etc. It could be anything.

So, if the whackos had their way and enforced armed teachers in school, would she have been justified in shooting the kid in self-defence? (Can't imagine a teacher doing so, but this is all unreality, so...)

I guess we got confirmed again that it's seen as normal that people kill each other whenever for whatever reason. Congratulations to the ever evolving human society. 🤢

And then they sit there wondering why less people are willing to be a teacher now
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

the sickest point is that their reasoning is sound - in spite of the fact that, IMO, there was administrative negligence regarding earlier warnings. Dystopia indeed.

So, "getting shot on the job" is now an "assumed risk" for U.S. school teachers when they take the job?

What an F'ed up country we're becoming under #GOP control.

#GOP

I hope their fucking insurance gets cancelled, and no one will ever insure them again.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

shortages (for this and other reasons, of course. See #Florida). No need to wonder why.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

So Virginia teachers should all be getting combat pay if that's just a hazard of the job.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Getting shot to death is just a personal risk you take for living in the US of A.
That is not a dystopia, but gruesome reality.

So teachers are expected to risk gunfire from their students as part of their job description???
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

for a cop maybe, not for a nurse, teacher or someone taking on the role of a public servant. Even a prison guard would probably be able to sue the prison if they were shot by a prisoner and it was proven that it was due to the negligence of the prison. Outside of a parody on her workplace I don’t believe she’s ever uttered the words “it comes with the job” after she saves two children held hostage in another teachers classroom. Negligence of parents or school. That’s where I’d be going🎖.

If it was a worker's comp issue then it's an workplace health and safety issue and the employers responsible need to be charged with failing to provide a safe workspace and forced to take appropriate remedial action to make the workplace safe.
