Given enough traction, it'll get more and more impossible for publishers to ignore the SteamOS user base, but I'm guessing it's going to be a rough couple of years ahead for fans of online competitive games...

"I’m very comfortable saying that if a game doesn't install invasive kernel level malware on your computer, they’re not serious about anti-cheat."

Fixed for the Rust dev.

Hopefully, anti-cheats biggest problem will be the success of the Steam Machine.

If anti-cheat is so important run it as input validation server side. The networks should be quick enough now days as should the hardware. Probably more expensive than clients side though.

I fully understand why the common Anti-cheat software Linux not even think about to support. But, is there really no way that Linux may implement a kernel based tool that allows to reliable run a Software in a way that it could be trusted in a way that so its not - (not easy) - to manipulate?

I do not really understand how anti-cheat works but i generally support the idea behind that. Cause I see that this idea may could also benefit software running on out-sourced servers.
