in reply to Rob Shearer • • •Thanks for the respectful & thorough notes. I absolutely love what the federated web is trying to do, and Mastodon is my only “guilt-free” social site.
But as a UX designer (and a guy who wants his non-techie friends to feel comfortable enough with the federated web to move over from Insta / X), it’s hard seeing concerns about usability (and your other points) dismissed in order to keep the club small.
I hope this inspires change, either at here or a new site.

in reply to Eugen Rochko • • •@Gargron Not by you, to my knowledge. Generally, the sentiment of replies from folks here when I mention the need for it to be easy for non-techies to join, is a reaction of fear. Like it’s best as exclusive club.
That, and a few other UX barriers to “normie” usage (e.g. easy cross-server interactions & global-ish search) still make it a hard sell to friends. #UX was mentioned as a big barrier in a “Fedi House” event at SXSW.
