I've been enjoying this book a lot.

Takashi Kojima's Advanced Abacus, incidentally it describes something very similar to the Karatsuba algorithm in the alternative multiplication techniques.

an abacus is the natural next-gen upgrade for an old style shop keeper I know, who currently does additions either mentally or using pen and paper. I would like to gift him one, but I'm afraid it's a "faster horse" he won't ride. He sells calculators.
