For personal data I try to be mindful when I'm doing important things or if I haven't saved my data folder in a while I copy to a network drive.
When I did backups for a university I did a rolling 10 on the critical data.. mon-thur, fri1,2,3,mo1,mo2, etc.. daily backups Monday through Thursday rotating Fridays and every fourth week rotating month and I usually stored the month ones indefinitely.
I use @syncthing on various devices to sync important data to a server. On the server I'm using @borgmatic to take backups and save encrypted archives to the cloud, hosted by @borg_base
Local nextcloud server for quicker recovery (literally in my living room), and a cloud one for off-site stuff. I've also used git in the past, but not so much anymore.
Btrfs hourly snapshots when active on computer. Then restic takes the last snapshot of the week and sends it to cloud storage, every week. Fully automated with cronjob.
Works like a charm. I've already needed it 🙃
(Planning to try the automation with systemd instead just for the sake of learning)
