goddamnit. I recently bought a Lenovo and the Linux ones were all over my budget, so had to pay the Windows tax. Knew I should have waited.

I prefer laptops without any OS. They are rare, but they are out there. I used to prefer ones with Windows, but I fell in love with Ubuntu few years ago and now it's the first thing I install on my laptops.

I don't know why people transition relatively easily from Windows to MacOS, but something like Ubuntu is so alien to them even though it's almost the same damn transition as it is to MacOS. Even the dock is there...

In many devices from Lenovo you can choose which OS you want - or if you don't want one at all. In terms of Linux you can choose Ubuntu which makes a difference of 100 EUR compared to Windows 11 Professional here in Germany.

This isn't that new but a great indicator in terms of compatibility and a great option these days, too.

glad that they are offering linux pre-installed, especially because for some people its the hardest part and if they can make everything to work, or at least make it easier to use out-of-box for the user, then its really good! And they can save money not choosing windows either!

For me, advanced user, I wish they would offer laptops without OS, so I can do my own installation without forcibly paying for the windows which I dont want or need

Hopefully in the future we see more brands

In Finland a few models appear to have the option of no OS, but unfortunately no Linux options.

I'm not sure about other countries but #Dell AU/NZ customer support is apparently happy with installing Linux on any laptop before shipping it if you arrange in advance, according to what they told me.

and a community project is looking into building EU OS, an OS based on fedora Linux to create an alternative to Windows and MacOS. This could in the long run mean more software independent of the US. Exciting times for Linux.

been running Linux Mint for past few months on my Lenovo Yoga that's from 2022 (I think). Been a pretty good experience so far.

The Chinese government is changing all government computers and servers to KylinOS by 2026. Chinese computer manufacturers will be loading openKylinOS on domestic personal computers with HarmonyOS taking over the domestic phone market. Open Source will be taking a great leap forward.

recent #Lenovo #Thinkpad #Laptop like T14 Gen 5 has pretty decent #repairability score:

ifixit.com/repairability/lapto…

Not as good as #framework but it is still good to have alternatives.

Be aware of proprietary binary blobs in #firmware and #bios hence I can recommend to also have a look here for other great #laptops:

semi-rare lenovo w. my yoga c740 is made of metal plates and will never die but it was ridiculously expensive for a shittily-specced laptop. does have touchscreen and pen support though, very thin but not easily upgradeable

@crosswalk It's not quite straightforward, as you need to use the terminal to install VeraCrypt in Linux Mint (and, I assume, a distro like Ubuntu as well, as that serves as Mints basis).

This guide is reasonably clear: linuxcapable.com/how-to-instal…

I've been a Windows user for a long time but I've been using Mint for quite a while as well. I've learned a lot and especially not to be afraid of the terminal window when it's needed to get things done 😆
