I did a DNA test a while ago, and it turns out I am descended from Welsh Quakers who colonized Pennsylvania. I'd like to be able to say that my ancestors never owned slaves, but that might not be true. Some of them did, but in 1776 or so the big slaveholders among the Quakers were gone and they began in earnest to campaign for abolition both in the US and back in England, and helping enslaved people to get free. It's a bit of a relief.

Quakers have evolved and split into different types of Quakerism these days. I have much respect for liberal Quakerism.

I've always gravitated more to the "Peace" churches in general. I respected the anti-slavery sentiments and the conscientious objection to military service and refusal to salute the flag on the grounds that it was a form of idolatry (it is). It's cool that they turned out to be my people after all. 😀

Mine certainly didn't. They were in Poland and Russia hiding from the progroms.

My alma mater, however, was an Underground Railroad stop. Slave catchers were run out of town.
