Think of the state’s Central Valley region as a giant swimming pool: GRACE-FO measurements include all the water contained in the lakes, rivers, soil, snowpack, and underground aquifers within that region. Winter storms raised levels by about 20 inches (about 500 millimeters). #NASAEarth
Also, it has been MASSIVELY overdrilled and sucked down by wells during the droughts - so much so that the earth was sinking, making bridges and roads buckle. That's going to take some refilling from mother nature's hose...
