#20YearsAgo today Space Shuttle Columbia launched on mission STS-107 with Rick Husband, Willie McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon on board.
Astronaut Chawla came to my university when I was an undergrad and spoke with one of my classes at the @universityofcolorado was great hearing her speak and something I'll never forget.
What I remember the most is the difference in the reactions; after Challenger, everyone was still in shock for days, even if you weren't "one of them weird space freaks."
Columbia? It was pushed aside by all the news channels in an hour or so, and when I went out later that same day, there was literally no one else talking about it, or even seemed to be aware of it having happened. It didn't even make front-page news where I was, I don't think.
That was when I knew something had fundamentally changed in society, for the worse. Much worse.
