Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?

This is The Coffer Illusion.

Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, “pixels” are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no “right” grouping.

Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.

initially rectangles, but I can more or less switch between rectangles and circles at will.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Still rectangles.

Tho this particular optical puzzle is new to me, my brain immediately lock down on the 90 degree angles everywhere which kinda stops it from flipping to circles?

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Rectangles only, try as I might I can't see how there can even be any circles at all. As far as I can see, they are just not there.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

When I finally saw the circles… it kept flipping back to squares for me.

Even now that I can clearly see the circles, I still have trouble if I try to look at the whole image, as my brain keeps switching back to the squares. Wild!

I see rectangles. I found the circles, but rectangles are still dominant for me.

Witchcraft! Interessting witchcraft though. It keeps flipping back to rectangles when I blink
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

ah, I see what you mean! I was about to ask, “How long do I have to stare?”, when the circles appeared! Pretty cool!#CofferIllusion

I may be broken.

🤣 I hadda turn off auto-rotate, skew it about 30° sideways, hold it out to the side of my vision, and focus on something further away, while trying not to focus on anything... then I started seeing J's.

Still no circles, tho.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Aaaaaah! Part of it is squares, part of it is circles! And they change when my eye shifts!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

not seen this before. I found the trick is allow your eyes to relax and then it'll flip depending on whether you focus on the actual rectangles or the area where one meets the next. Fascinating
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Yep, rectangles first. Couldn’t image where the circles were, but after 10-15 seconds they appeared!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

circles?? lol Who in their right mind would see circles? This must be one of those troll posts.. there's no way a circle is..... well I'll be damned! 😮
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I saw the circles at first glance, then read your post and could only see the rectangles. Had to glance away and look back before the circles reappeared.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I used to play with stare-eo images, years ago, so it flipped over to circles for me pretty quickly, but it definitely started as squares.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

nope, rectangles

I guess I would say the rectangles feel "real" to me and the circles are illusory, I can see where they are but they don't seem "real"

So what happens if you get them both... usually switching at will? 👀
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Rectangles. I can see the circles, but I have to really work at it.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I see the circles when I focus on them, but in my peripheral vision I only see the rectangles.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

This old man wearing prescription readers was unable to get circles but I could defocus to add an additional column of perfectly replicated squares and the entire image seemed to be floating off the surface of my iPad screen.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

as others said I very quickly learned how to change my perception at will. That's very surprising as I don't recall any illusion were I was able to do that (or at least so easily).
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

i could stare at that for 3 hours, and all that my mind tells me is; "There's no f-ing way these will ever become circles..."
I'd be extremely interested in meeting someone who can actually see circles though.

I briefly saw circles but only in the top two lines, and now I can't see them again!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Is this one of those things where you need binocular vision? I stared so long I started seeing colour, but not the faintest vestige of a circle.
