Why does the one with the d-pad in the right position have just a circle?

How are people still trying to reinvent the d-pad at this point (and so often getting it wrong)?

I'm enjoying all these "high-end" controllers with new innovative features. I hope they push the console manufacturers to do better.

They left potential sales on the table with that screen aspect ratio. Won't work acceptably for Dreamcast VMU emulation.
