Window Manager Shill Switches To KDE Plasma 6 #Linux #YouTube https://youtu.be/RMJ3QWp7gVU
in reply to Brodie Robertson

KDE requires that buy-in into the rest of the software that comes with it. Otherwise, I don't think it offers that much more.

Not that it is the desktop environment that I install on hardware when Sway is not an option.

@Linux_Is_Best I shouldn't need to nuke my OS to install a desktop

I have a "minimal" plasma metapackage for the 'I use Arch, BTW' Linux distro, in case you want to use it as a base for yours https://codeberg.org/brunomiguel/minimal-plasma

@Linux_Is_Best I'm daily driving Plasma, I'm not going to spend all my time in a virtual machine.

I didn't review anything, I did a video on my experience. Not sure how I can be a hater of plasma when I don't hate it

@Linux_Is_Best It's a first impressions video

@Linux_Is_Best Are you happy now

I hope they fix the minimal install / packaging issues because not everyone uses a KDE 'centric distro like Fedora KDE Spin or KDE Neon. it's still pretty crunchy but that's why i don't use Arch myself. I'll wait or submit my own bug reports on my other machine.

it's a shame it didn't live up to the hype for you, but I'm hopeful that the Plasma team will take the feedback constructively -- none of the issues you pointed out are the sort of thing that requires a huge rewrite, so I can absolutely see all of them getting fixed in future versions!

I honestly had a similar experience to you back when I used Plasma -- I constantly found myself getting frustrated by small glitches and stutters (and a few bigger bugs like one where connecting a second monitor would completely reset my desktop layout and delete all my panels and widgets), until I eventually switched to Gnome (I need 500 extensions to be happy but at least I am happy).

as a daily plasma (5.27) user, I thought that this video was pretty informative imo. KDE should definitely show an error to the user if a package/lib is missing. Though maybe kde developers didn't design the de for a minimal package scenario. Who is the maintainer of the arch package anyway?
in reply to Warriormaster

@warriormaster The KDE Packaging guidelines state "These are packages that we recommend you pre-installed by default, or install when the user installs your "KDE Plasma Desktop" metapackage.", if they don't want to support it that should be changed to required https://community.kde.org/Distributions/Packaging_Recommendations
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@warriormaster Indeed, it’s ridicules that display management is an optional package even though it is a crucial part of the desktop environment.

Maybe you want to have a look at the option:

"Window Management" -> "Window Behaviour" -> "Advanced" -> "Window placement"

I have set it to "Minimal Overlapping" and it's the main reason why I never even considered using a tiling window manager. My konsole windows (I like them statically at 80x25, as nature intended! 😉 ) line up just as I like it and everything else is placed fine when using the "drop it to the edge" feature. But that's my personal preference, of course.

looking forward to the deep dive on the per-screen workspace issue

@cymaphore @Linux_Is_Best I don't like the typical "reviews" that come out the Linux space, most people do a very surface level look at it and what you here you can often get by just reading the release notes

Cymaphore

@Linux_Is_Best He is approaching it in his own way and makes entertaining videos along the way. Nothing to worry about if you ask me.

Much more interesting than all those boring superficial demonstrations on perfect fresh installs that are already out there on video.

Have you found the "Desktop Indicator" applet yet? Its a good but simple replacement for the KDE virtual desktop display.
