@ephemeral *high five* I'm trying to explain the concept of extractive reading to friends, and the best I can do is something inelegant like the opposite of "whole is greater than the sum of parts".

nice thanks! I'll trade you two more of my favourites in a similar direction, though both are pretty well known: 'Mushroom at the End of the World' by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing (for an amazing research project on complexity, environment and gift culture) and 'Living as a Bird' by Vinciane Despret (for deep thoughts on human bias).
