The adorable Venezuelan poodle moth was discovered & photographed in 2009 by Dr. Arthur Anker. It’s supposedly the only sighting of this critter, but insects are small & Earth is big. So imagine the diversity of species we haven’t found yet…

If there has only been one sighting, is it possible this individual was a mutation?

What really amazes me is how species can exist and have no problem finding eachother to mate.. yet the whole human race can go 100 yyears and not document even one of them.... Thats the cool part, that the earth can be so big and yet they still find eachother.

Awwww! I love this to be true and that dr. Arthur Anker has never heard of AI generated photos! ;)

I'm not 100% convinced this isn't a still of young Mothra from a Godzilla movie.

Poodle?! More like a winged version of a gremlin! Remember; do not feed it after midnight or get it wet!

how'd you like to be moth sized and then you come up on this dude. It'd be so weird

Are we sure it's not just a regular mouth who identifies as a poodle? 😉

The Venezuelan poodle moth is a beautiful animal. There was an article back in 2012 in #TheAtlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2012/08/venezuelan-poodle-moth-internets-favorite-real-life-pokemon-tk/324111/ that traced the story and found out that it was real and not an internet fake.

The source of the photo for the Venezuelan poodle moth: https://www.flickr.com/photos/artour_a/4207478815/in/album-72157603542118616/

That album by Arthur Anker contains many more photos of extraordinary neotropical moths https://www.flickr.com/photos/artour_a/albums/72157603542118616/with/3947813697/ plus a few other insects.

The photos are simply out of this world. Here are a couple of my favourites:

Only been seen once? By only one person? Looks that bizarre? Might be the Loch Ness Moth…
