Spend time with it. Don't just install a distro and expect everything to work right out of the box. Ideally, pick a day or week for the installation where you don't need the machine in any productive way.
don't rush it or you may get overwhelmed. Linux has a lot of choice and sometimes some issues. Take it easy and learn your new OS.
Also don't be scared of The Terminal. You'll often find terminal commands in various guides because they work on almost any distro (unlike the graphical way of doing it because there are many desktop environments on Linux that are all quite different and have different settings menus).
if you are about to use a command either found on the internet or given by a friend, check out its documentation either via man <command> or <command> --help or <command> -h, because: 1. your version may differ, and 2. you are investing your time in yourself being able to solve more problems in the future.
When things get complex, remember it's because you are getting to make a choice instead of being forced into one way of doing things. With more freedom comes more responsibility.
first of all... Welcome! Second, you are on your way to making the world a little better. Third, just ask. If some people are rude, its because they're people, not because they're into Linux
don't try and replace apps one for one replace for functionality. This goes both ways tbh. Anytime I am forced to use windows in a corp environment I spend the first two weeks just trying to get the computer to "act properly"

Choose some easy and predictable distro (Like Ubuntu) to start--unless you want to get right into geekdom.
First thing to learn is how to install and remove software. There are tutorials galore, like in YouTube. Just seatch.
When you want to do something, search for apps. There are tons of them.
The Linux community, especially distro communities, provides fantastic help and advice.

- Stay away from Ubuntu
- Stay away from Gnome
You'll thank me later.

It is significantly easier to get help fixing problem you might come across in Linux due to the passionate community.
Most software works or has alternatives in Linux. There are very few things you still need Windows for.
