here's an example of what the earlier edits looked like: i added a bunch of shot/reverse shots and colour grading changes to this scene. it's stupid but it gets me every time

this is my favourite joke by far. i'm not even going to describe what it is here, i want you to experience even a fraction of the surprise that the people i showed this to in person had when watching it for the first time

i mentioned keeping it a secret in the first post. you might be wondering why i did that.

this is an example of what noodle on youtube calls a "gaslight edit". the point of these edits is to present them as if you were just watching the normal movie. as the movie goes on, the edits get more and more extreme, and the victim viewer begins to doubt their memory. eventually, the edits become ridiculous enough that it's obvious that the movie has been edited, at which point you reveal your sick and twisted nature

in reply to Lynnesbian

at one point, all the assets for the project were occupying 60 gigabytes of space on my laptop. it was worth every byte
in reply to Lynnesbian

i made this for my girlfriend roxie (bsky.app/profile/roxie.compute…). she loved it so much she added several of her own edits -- for example, the additional "...eight" in the prior scene
in reply to Lynnesbian

due to popular demand... Star Wars: Lynne & Roxie Edition in all its glory! i don't really know what i'm doing with torrents, so hopefully this works 🤞

fun fact this torrent killed my phone a little bit and I had to use a real computer instead
in reply to zivi

@SymTrkl it is hevc??? fucking hevc and 15gb??? bwh u couldve just as well encoded it with xvid to this size

(feel free to ignore me but miku damn)

in reply to zivi

@SymTrkl how was this encoded. i know video editors tend to have dogshit export options so thats that, i can assume something like nvenc (with bad defaults)
in reply to zivi

@SymTrkl also chances are the source material was not 1080p so 1080p here mightve been largely a waste
in reply to zivi

@SymTrkl oh nvm apparently thereve been some rereleases at high resolution so its whatever
in reply to zivi

@zaire @SymTrkl originally it was ~4.5GB. when roxie added her edits and reexported it, she chose a super high bitrate (because she has Video Quality Autism) and yeah 16GB movie
in reply to Lynnesbian

I've never seen the first Star Wars movie, will I regret going straight into this? :blobcatFearful:
in reply to Lynnesbian

just ambushed my enbyfriend with this, and we got a lot of laughs out of it. thank you immensely

thank you for so faithfully preserving george lucas's original vision

for anyone wondering why the ending cards say "what he believed to be obi-wan's death"... i genuinely didn't realise obi-wan died in this movie. i thought he just teleported away, and that was why luke could still hear him.

i didn't even know about force ghosts being a thing. the idea to have a transparent PNG of obi's face appear whenever he talks was my own thing.

i think this is the best edition, and you should upload it to torrent sites as "Star Wars" with no warning.

reminded of watching "The Force Awakens" when it came out and making fun of all the scene transitions
in reply to Lynnesbian

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space best movie I've ever watched while drinking with friends. 10/10.
in reply to Ada

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space we're all so drunk, and oonly at the garbage compactor scene
in reply to Ada

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space pleaase, could we get a link to the origina/l dr pepper advertisement in there, we want to see it

in reply to Lynnesbian

huh, a lot better than i remember but i don't think i've watched star wars all the way through without falling asleep
in reply to Lynnesbian

the moment I saw you talking about this I knew this must be a gaslight edit. gosh noodle's video about it was so good
in reply to Lynnesbian

I was not ready, and then I was not ready again. Amazing

in reply to Dot Maetrix

@DotMaetrix i will admit that my skills and precision with ffmpeg -to 01:23:45 leave something to be desired
in reply to Lynnesbian

Please upload it to peertube or just make a torrent when it is done.
in reply to SuperDicq

@SuperDicq it's finished, i made it a few months ago!

i might upload it eventually, but i've never made a torrent before and don't know how to

in reply to Lynnesbian

Do you have a torrent client like qbittorrent installed?
in reply to Lynnesbian

You can go in Tools -> Torrent Creator

Add the file, and click "Create torrent", then share the torrent file. You don't even have to add a tracker, DHT should take care of it.

in reply to SuperDicq

@SuperDicq alright, i'll talk to my coconspirator and see if they're comfortable with it being shared 👍
in reply to Lynnesbian

you put this onto a dodgy file hosting platform and you post that link this instant! :gunhand:

in reply to Lynnesbian

thank you lynne. now i just have to go home, far away from my awful terrible office firewall that fully fuckin blocks ports for torrents. 😩
in reply to Lynnesbian

it's probably too early in the movie to make such an edit, but it would be funny if han solo just shot greedo 30 times in a row on sight
in reply to Kranston

@sudo_EatPant it took so much restraint not to touch that scene. i had so many ideas...
in reply to Lynnesbian

@sudo_EatPant i made this for my girlfriend roxie. she loved it so much that she added a few of her own edits. she had an idea for the "han shoots first" scene, which couldn't be added to the actual movie because it would give it away, but she left it in as a post credits easter egg type thing
in reply to Lynnesbian

montage parodies are back baby, thanks for the great laugh honestly i've never watched star wars but now i'll probably watch both just for funny
in reply to Lynnesbian

I don't think I can watch the original movie without getting reminded of this masterpiece now :^)
in reply to Lynnesbian

... and since Ben Burtt (sound designer for Star Wars) very much helped proliferating the running gag of movie sounds: Do you have incorporated the Wilhelm Scream somewhere? :mastoread: (Can't watch the full edit for the next two days to find out myself...)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_… (section "History", 3rd paragraph)
in reply to Lynnesbian

are you gonna put this on youtube? I would love to add this to the Horrible Memes playlist I have going on with my siblings
in reply to schratze

@schratze i don't think youtube would take well to me uploading 95% of star wars 😅
in reply to Lynnesbian

I was just talking about this particular snippet, I think youtube can handle it
in reply to Lynnesbian

@BigTittyBimbo

This feels like the first time I watched the ascii bootleg. Absolutely fucking revolutionary.

in reply to Lynnesbian

incredible stuff, great work! it's inspired me to think about some edits for my in-group popular films (twilight, national treasure, hackers)... the fact that you have to restrain yourself for the first half is SO funny to me.

I'm thinking also of good framing devices that let you get away with more - Noodle's "lost VHS tape" is a good bit, you could also do "whoops I accidentally downloaded a foreign release" (lets you sneak in a bunch of subtitle gags), or "well it turns out this is a dodgy camrip" (make the screen shake increase more and more as the movie goes on)

in reply to Greg

@greg i had a whole backstory planned. "i was browsing this obscure forum and found this thing called Star Wars Legacy Edition where some guy claimed to have taken the best most accurate scenes from both 4K77 and the special edition"
@Greg
in reply to Lynnesbian

Ok, the USB plugging sound broke me.
Then the mudcrabs.
Then the Serious Sam scream, immediately followed by "[Stupid fucking Wookie moan]" and "[Another one]"

I'm cackling here
