The plan is to invest in my fitness and have a new sporty bike for commuting. (20km a day - 100km a week)

75% outside tarmac & bike paths the 25% city.

Currently there are two bikes I have tested and liked, the bike shop unusually go to recommended the a little cheaper Merida - but it would come with battery lights.

Any recommendations from #bike nerds?

If it's not hilly, I'd get a single speed. Have lights that are removable and rechargeable.

My ideal commute bike has no derailer or complex parts like disk brakes.

in that case, get BMX pedals with straps, so you can pull upward on hills 😀

Straps will be problematic if you have to wear boots. You might also have trouble dismounting in an emergency.
Going single speed isn't a bad idea though, but if you later decide to get a bike trailer, you will appreciate being able to haul some more massive cargo using a derailleur. But if you want something durable, maybe go with an internal hub.
Maybe it's possible to buy a bike with a derailleur but convert it to single speed until you need the extra gears?
