BerryWM could be a good candidate for that if you don't want to write something that interacts with Uxn specifically.

It's controlled via stdio.

I've been putting things like this into a single UI that I can bring up with a hotkey. Screen brightness, ASCII chart, current IP address, app launcher etc, all in one place. It's incredibly convenient :neofox_laptop:

Whoa, how are you controlling the system volume from inside uxn? Is it just calling a command-line mixer program?
