Making a little paper computer zine that teaches the basics of programming using multiset rewriting in 8 pages. I'll bring a bunch with me to the Merveilles meetup next month :maru:

@chrisamaphone I can send you one if you'd like 😀 on me, for your amazing work in that space, as a token of gratitude!
in reply to chris martens

@chrisamaphone that works! I've got to actually finish the thing and print it, but once I'm done I'll send it over, early november.

... any chance digital versions of this would be available somewhere? or is what you're writing in this being discussed around the horadric mailing list? just discovered this whole through your posts, seems really interesting 😳

Devine Lu Linvega
@lukianos it will : )
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

will you be selling it in digital form? (related question: what’s your favourite document file format)
in reply to Aiden Fox Ivey

@aidenfoxivey It'll make it available for free online to download 😀 Probably going to put it up as a PNG

Make your own little rewrite #zine that covers the basics of multiset rewriting programming!

@soxfox42 I juuuust got back from the library, dammit you beat me to it!
@Finn
in reply to Finn

By the way, here's the adjusted version I made for metric paper.
in reply to Finn

@soxfox42 ah! perfect, can I host a copy of this? What's the paper size in cm?
@Finn
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

Yeah, feel free - it's your work after all, I just shifted some pixels around. I printed on A4 (297x210mm), but it would work on any of the Ax papers.

the little scissors nommin the centre fold is, I think, one of the best things I have ever seen.

What did you use to lay this out? I havent made one of these in years and ai remember the last being a nightmare.

in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

ah, ok, that was how I did the pages last time and them I arranged them in libre office.
in reply to James Chip

@jameschip Oh wow, that's more complicated I think, I just split an image in 8, and then added text inside. The whole file is just one image with a bunch of layers
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

it isnt just a bit more difficult, it is basically bullying yourself. I have no idea why I didnt just do the whole thing in gimp.

It can be done with LaTeX too, but I dont hate myself enough to bother with that.

Are the ■ and ● backwards?
In the pamphlet it goes:
▲●●
●■ ???
▲▲●
in reply to dosboy0xff

@dosboy0xff multisets are unordered 😀 think of it like an inventory in a video game, or a bag with marbles in it.
in reply to dosboy0xff

@dosboy0xff I'll make it more explicit in the zine! It's a good thing that it was lost on you, it should have been clearer.
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

no, letter, but our printer struggled to pull the paper and it got a bit off 😅 not enough to warrant a reprint, so 🤷
in reply to ferunando

@gureito haha well as long as it's readable. If you get the png from the site again, you'll see it has 4 tiny black dots at the edges, which can be used to get the size right ;)

It is cold and windy outside so another one made! Thank you for this: Folding and cutting the paper was fun. Now you have nerd-sniped me into wanting to understand Fractran and have got me thinking of what machines could be made from paper.

Devine Lu Linvega reshared this.

in reply to shortcolin

@shortcolin Oh wow, well I would be delighted to help you understand fractran if you have any questions 😀
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

Thank you: It looks likely I will have many questions! I have added Fractran to my list of interesting things to look at so thank you for bringing it to my attention. Cutting computers out of paper reminds me of Bret Victor's graphical "alligator" lambda calculus https://worrydream.com/AlligatorEggs/ - I am currently very curious about the Dynamicland/Realtalk stuff he is researching. I like ways of making computation visible and tangible.
in reply to shortcolin

@shortcolin If you feel extra fancy, when you print it(the lasted revision, you printed the first one) there are 4 black dots at the edge of the image that shows where the margin of your printer is, it helps to make pages that are centered.
