ICYMI: Playtron plan to launch PlaytronOS, a Linux-based system for gaming, although their statement on the Steam Deck being "Locked to the Valveverse" is easily demonstrably false https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/playtron-plan-to-launch-playtronos-a-linux-based-system-for-gaming/

yeah, their current marketing is full if shit. Talking about how "immutability" of their OS is going to protect publishers from hacking in their games.

at the end this is going to be proton / valves improvements packaged into fedora.

A bunch of problematic things I noticed:

- mockup looks like they're pitching a device.
- mockup is missing critical functionality (buttons)
- infected with cryptocurrency brainworms
- they haven't decided about open source yet
- trash talking existing devices, yet being vaporware itself
- grand claims that have no backing in reality (like Epic, Fortnite, Roblox)

I've seen some talk about several of these, but most people have missed one or more, especially the cryptocurrency.

I don’t mind when another company says “Hey, we can do ‘this’ better…and here’s how.”
When they say instead “Hey, we can do the *same* thing and btw we’re better because the other guy sucks because reasons.” …then my first thought is no and no…

it's just as "locked" to the valve eco system as Windows is to the Microsoft store. There are lots of ways to play games from other stores on the Steam Deck.

.. the bigger question is: will #Playtron contribute back to the #Linux / #FOSS community that it is built on? Likely given who they’ve hired, but we don’t know. Valve is making big money, but no question that they contribute back (and obviously Playtron won’t build their own Proton from scratch).

It will be interesting to see if this goes anywhere really….but this seems like it will basically wind up deck/chimera/etc just with their own base distro spin on it. All of which can run more than just Steam anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️
