Hello Fediverse!

I'm sharing a thing that I hope can be the beginning for many conversations, and represents for me a statement that is the result of many years of conversation:

slocanstatement.org/

I call it the #SlocanStatement, and I'm sharing it here first, in public, in the spirit of the Fediverse.

I hope you'll read it, share it if you think it's a valuable statement, and comment and revise it towards building consensus across the Fediverse.

this feels like it could be a missing charter document for the (as yet fictional) Information from Malka Older's #Infomocracy

Exciting and, of course, already fraught with challenges

Do you use bookwyrm & federated sites like it as a reading list? This is an excellent thing and I want to think about how that works more.

only just started! But yes! It's ... really great? 🎉

(the only thing I wish is that I could use the same identity on mastodon as on bookwyrm, so I could occasionally boost stuff from there to here!)

can you just... follow your bookwyrm alt and boost their (your) content?

... also IANA UX designer but I think i want to read about user journeys in bookwyrm before i start my own

it looks like cross-platform follows should work, but I'm not getting updates across the wires. I'm not sure if something's failing, or if it's just that the queues are all gummed up (or both). Will check again in the morning. 😅

(and this seems like an *excellent* use-case; if it doesn't work, it absolutely can and should!)

it does work. I boost my bookwyrm account posts from mastodon as I primarily access the fediverse via this platform. This large influx of users to mastodon has triggered the beginning my journey of evaluating if this should truly be my "hub" identity/handle

A nice start. Something to think about as this goes forward is make sure other voices are represented here instead of exclusively voices that are typically involved in the creation of systems.

@DrSuzanne 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

I explicitly didn't take it to the group-of-people-who-normally-talk-about this-stuff for exactly that reason.

I hate those "we the undersigned group of insiders" posts, precisely because they exclude so many voices.

I don't feel strongly about being involved in any process going forward, much less driving it.

I'll be involved if invited, but I wanted to use my voice & reach to help people start a conversation. ❤️

Is there no way to tag other servers? That would be ideal. Because you want to get your message out beyond your circle of mutuals/followers.
in reply to Dr Suzanne she/her

@DrSuzanne the normal mechanism is to use hashtags, but mastodon works best by way of messages being boosted; six degrees of k b & all that! 😅
in reply to blaine

Yes, I understand that. My concern is that the message won’t reach a broad enough audience. Just saying I hope this message reaches a wide audience doesn’t seem like enough. 🤷🏼‍♀️
in reply to Dr Suzanne she/her

@DrSuzanne there is also the factor that many instances (like ours) cannot view posts from mastodon.social without following thus is can be a bit tricky to expose conversations to them. It seems like the audience you're trying to reach is not folks from other instances though, but rather instance admins (and not just mastodon...) The considerations for making this conversation more widespread thus should focus on these individuals IMO.
