This week, two solar system objects gained names.

Meet Dinkinesh, an asteroid that the #LucyMission will flyby on Nov 1, 2023. 'Dinkinesh' is the Ethiopian name for the human-ancestor fossil, also known as Lucy, which was discovered there.

Our #LucyMission was already set to break records by visiting 9 asteroids during its 12-year mission. Now it will be adding another asteroid flyby to its 4-billion-mile journey. The new flyby will also provide a test run for later encounters. 🛰🪨 More: go.nasa.gov/3wxFXid

Lucy in the sky! On Oct. 16, NASA's #LucyMission flew a mere 160 miles (260 kilometers) from the Earth's surface. 22 minutes later, team members caught a glimpse of the spacecraft with a telescope in Nebraska, just as Lucy emerged from Earth's shadow. youtu.be/gSHJ3uSnI-A #NASASolarSystem
