Is it a fungus or a shy little forest creature poking it's head into the bark so you don't see it?

Near as I can tell maybe a Northern Cinnabar Polypore just emerging from under bark of an old, dried log in the woods. It is a a few shades of orange and teamed with the soft/fuzzy covering it looks less like a fungus right now than some intricate caterpillar. Where it is emerging below the bark you can see how it is pushing out of every nearby crack. Behind it is blurred out forest of green leaves.
