2D game editor ct.js goes open source and it's closing in on a new major release

With an aim to make 2D game development learning fun, ct.js recently went open source to allow anyone to jump in and try it as well as help push it further.

It's going through a major revamp too, with the first few preview builds available. Since we're covering it, of course this means the editor has Linux support too! As the name of the game engine might suggest, games in ct.js are written in JavaScript.

With the "ct.js Next" releases, it includes quite a number of new and interesting features like a WebGL renderer, skeletal animations with DragonBones support, complex collision shapes with transform support, an improved fullscreen mode, more settings and tools and quite a lot more. Sounds like it could be quite interesting for making some smaller 2D games.

One to watch perhaps to see how advanced it becomes, I will be following it along now to see what other exciting features it brings to the game development table.

You can find it on itch.io, GitHub under the MIT license and more on the official site. Want to know what they're working on next? You can follow their roadmap here.

Hat tip to Wendigo.

Eliza, the new Visual Novel from Zachtronics is out now with Linux support

Usually known for their excellent puzzle games, Zachtronics have released Eliza, a new and intriguing sounding Visual Novel.
Eliza is a visual novel about an AI counseling program, the people who develop it, and the people who use it. Follow Evelyn Ishino-Aubrey as she reconnects with people from her past, gets to know the people of Seattle who use Eliza for counseling, and decides the course of her future.

Feature Highlight:
  • A thought-provoking story told in the form of a visual novel from an award-winning indie team.
  • Follow Evelyn’s journey through a present-day Seattle brought to life with beautiful hand-painted art.
  • Get to know Eliza’s clients and the employees of Skandha, the technology giant behind it, with over a dozen fully-voiced characters and powerful performances from a highly regarded cast.
  • An evocative, ambient original score by the composer for Infinifactory, SHENZHEN I/O, Opus Magnum, and EXAPUNKS.
  • Is AI-driven counseling better than nothing? Is it worse than nothing? What responsibilities come with technical skills? Consider your own answers to these questions and more.
  • Counseling sessions getting a little too real? Relax with Kabufuda Solitaire, a new take on solitaire using Japanese kabufuda cards.

No Early Access stuff here, this is a complete game ready for you to dive right into. Not something I'm usually into either, but considering it's fully voiced and it's from a developer whose previous games I enjoyed (Opus Magnum in particular is fantastic) I think I might have to take a look.

Find it on itch.io or Steam.

VICCP, a mysterious puzzle game about pushing buttons on a control panel

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/viccp-a-mysterious-puzzle-game-about-pushing-buttons-on-a-control-panel.14696

Tags: #Steam, #Release, #Puzzle, #IndieGame, #VICCP, #GamingOnLinux, #Gaming

VICCP looks quite unusual, a puzzle game about a strange control panel that you need to tinker with to figure out how it all works and what exactly it does.
You are using mysterious remote control that you can control. Click on everything and explore. Make decisions, solve puzzles. Every choice you make will have consequences. The game has a lot of endings that you have to find yourself.

Originally released in June, the developer later added Linux support to it in early July.

Feature Highlight:
  • Lots of puzzles
  • Atmospheric graphics and soundtrack
  • Achievements/bonuses for each ending you find
  • Old school spirit
  • A lot of endings.
  • Many references and Easter eggs.

Seems like a pretty fun idea for a game, very similar to Please, Don’t Touch Anything which also has Linux support (Linux came after the original release) and is highly rated. VICCP only has around 33 user reviews, with it being a bit of a mixed back at "Mostly Positive". If you like vague and difficult puzzle games, this might be something to take a look at.

You can find VICCP on Steam.

Possession, a roguelike where you're a ghost that needs to possess others to survive

Certainly a fun sounding idea! Possession from developer Weirdfellows is a traditional turn-based roguelike, made on Linux and it just recently released. The whole idea reminds me of MidBoss, another excellent body-snatching roguelike.

Note: Key provided by the developer to our Steam Curator.

Watch video on YouTube.com

Feature Highlight:
  • Dozens of possessable monsters, from the horrifying to the hilarious, with a wide variety of powers.
  • Special themed levels with unique hazards, creatures and layouts. Randomly generated, so each playthrough is different!
  • Item-less gameplay. The dead have no need for worldly possessions, they just slow you down.
  • Quick to pick up and play. Unlike most roguelikes, Possession doesn't require you to memorize dozens of weird key commands, or puzzle over confusing skill and ability lists before you start playing.
  • Entirely playable with just the keyboard, just the mouse, or a combination of the two.
  • Mod support! Add your own creatures, powers and special levels, or change the ones already there.
  • Choice between graphics or ASCII mode, for the oldschool roguelike fans.

Interestingly, it seems the Linux version on Steam is distributed as an AppImage, can't say I see that being done very often. On Manjaro, I have to run it directly as it didn't like being launched from Steam but then it did work nicely.

After spending a few hours with it, I've enjoyed it a lot. I do usually appreciate roguelikes so that helped of course but the gameplay here is quite unique. Unlike some traditional roguelikes, Possession is actually very easy to get into and understand but the gameplay certainly isn't easy, it has been surprisingly challenging. You start off super weak, gradually making your way from body to body and getting stronger all the time. The different abilities across characters certainly makes it interesting and it's pretty amusing.

What makes it both funny and challenging, is that the abilities of the body you inhabit don't exactly work with you all the time. Zombies, for example, there's a chance that when you take down an enemy, they will return as a Zombie. Think you're going to be pals? Think again. Zombies don't make friends, they will come for you too. Add into that the abilities of all the other creatures after you and it's certainly going to test you.

Good fun! You can pick it up from itch.io and Steam, with itch also having a demo available.

The developer also decided to open up the code, with it available on GitHub under the MIT license. It only includes the code, no assets, so it can serve as a point for modders and others interested in the innards.

Friendica 2019.06 Released

Thanks everyone who contributed, be it directly by committing patches or new features, doing translations or reporting issues.

And now, we happily announce the availability of Friendica 2019.06. It contains many bug fixes, enhancements of existing functionality and some new features. The most noteworthy changes since the last release in March are:
  • Added native two-factor authentication
  • Added reshare counts
  • Added mascot to error pages (thanks to @lostinlight)
  • Moved Friendica private message and contact request to ActivityPub
You can find a complete overview of the changes in the CHANGELOG file.

How to Update

Updating from old Friendica versions

If you are updating from an older version than the 2018.09 release, please first update your Friendica instance to that version as there were several important changes in that version.

Please further note, that since Friendica 3.6 we use Composer for dependency management. If you are updating via git, you have to remember to update the dependencies as well.

Pre-Update Procedures

Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently. While testing, we did not encounter problems, but better safe than sorry.

With this release we raised the hard requirements to PHP 7. If you are still using PHP 5.6+, this version won’t work anymore on your system and we urge you to upgrade to PHP 7.1 at least.

Using Git

Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository. Remember to also update the dependencies with composer.
cd friendica
git pull
bin/composer.phar install
cd addon
git pull
If you want to switch the branch (e.g. if you helped testing the RC code) please do so after the pull using git checkout master (or develop).

Be aware that the .htaccess file was removed from the git repository in the 2019.01 version. You might have to restore yours from a backup (if you have done local changes) or from the .htaccess-dist if you had not done it before.

Using the Archive Files

If you had downloaded the source files in an archive file (zip or tar.gz) please download the current version of the archive (friendica-full-2019.06.zip and friendica-addons-2019.06.tar.gz) and unpack it on your local computer.

As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.

The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2019.06 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.

Please be aware of the changes in the configuration format in the 2019.03 version. You should follow the instructions linked from your admin panel as soon as possible to move your configuration to the new location.

Post Update Tasks

The database update should be applied automatically, but maybe it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script
bin/console dbstructure update
from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.

How to Contribute

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.

Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with Git(Hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Thanks everyone who helped making this release possible and have fun!
