Scientists expected a dynamic star-forming region of a nearby galaxy lower in heavier elements might be low on dust made from such materials, called metals. New data from @NASAWebb reveals the opposite as it finds the building blocks of potential planets! go.nasa.gov/3CFXiJo

We'll welcome Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio & @SecBlinken Friday, Jan. 13 at 4:30pm ET (2130 UTC) for an event marking our nations' continued commitment to the peaceful exploration of space.

The visit will air live on NASA TV and here on Twitter: go.nasa.gov/3XbjOC8

Discovery Alert! 📣
@NASAWebb not only confirms a planet candidate found by @nasa’s TESS space telescope, it provides new science, determining the planet is rocky. We also get preliminary atmospheric info. Good science and *excellent* teamwork! go.nasa.gov/3XfmOgi

LHS 475 b is relatively close, at only 41 light-years away, in the constellation Octans. We don’t yet know *if* it has an atmosphere, but @NASAWebb was already able to rule out a thick atmosphere. The telescope will study this planet this summer to tell us more!

Why is sea level rising?

Global sea levels are rising as a result of human-caused global warming, with recent rates being unprecedented over the past 2,500-plus years. @NASAJPL’s Ben Hamlington explains how our warming planet is causing sea level rise. sealevel.nasa.gov/understandin…

Stars across the spectrum! ⭐

These two views of NGC 346 show a dynamic, massive star-forming region in the Small Magellanic Cloud, which is a satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way.

What's going on in NGC 346?
#Hubble

In an image released today at #AAS241, @NASAWebb's near-infrared sensitivity detected dust in disks of material surrounding forming stars – which means that this region might contain the building blocks for not just stars, but planets as well! go.nasa.gov/3QAOVVe
#Hubble

The Hubble view (above on the left) shows NGC 346 in visible and near-infrared light. Outflows and radiation from young stars are wearing away at the denser outer portions of the region!

What was star formation like in the early universe? One way to study conditions in the distant past is to find parallels close by. That's why Webb took a look at star-forming region NGC 346 within our neighboring dwarf galaxy: go.nasa.gov/3CFXiJo #AAS241

A whole new world!

41 light-years away is the small, rocky planet LHS 475 b. At 99% of Earth’s diameter, it’s almost exactly the same size as our home world. This marks the first time researchers have used Webb to confirm an exoplanet. go.nasa.gov/3VY5WK1 #AAS241

in reply to NASA

Why is there a general downward slope to the starlight intensity line?

Although Webb data definitively confirms that LHS 475 b is a small rocky world, the existence and composition of its atmosphere is still a mystery. Additional observations are scheduled this summer to find out more.

So, I hear you. But what do you really want me, as an individual who already drives an economy car and lives a very frugal, low-impact lifestyle, to do about it? I can say anything I want about how I wish governments would push for Right to Repair, green energy incentives, and a reinvestment into our transportation and shipping industries but they just... don't listen to me. Kind of at all.
