If you have a pair of binoculars or a small telescope, you can also see Jupiter's moons. If you look closely here, Callisto and Ganymede are visible as tiny dots just above Jupiter

Working my way uphill, I recently spotted the #MarsHelicopter again, up ahead. Can you believe it’s flown over 6 miles (10 km), in 46 flights? Not bad for a test vehicle that was shooting for one successful hover to start with! 🤯

flying is easy, landing is hard. I’m amazed at the ability of #MarsHelicopter to land autonomously without turning over on a rock #Mars

Pioneer 10, launched #OTD in 1972, was designed for a 21-month flyby mission to Jupiter, but lasted for more than 30 years, racking up firsts along the way! By this day 50 years ago, it had passed the asteroid belt unscathed and was on its way to Jupiter. go.nasa.gov/3IH1j26

An international team including @nasa scientists mapped nearly 10 billion individual trees in Africa’s drylands. 🌳

Their goal? Assess the amount of carbon stored outside of Africa’s tropical forests, which is essential for climate change projections. go.nasa.gov/3ZzUg2l

New science results confirm our #DARTMission's asteroid deflection technology can be an effective way to change the orbit of an asteroid, should there ever be a threat. The DART spacecraft intentionally slammed into asteroid Dimorphos in Sept. 2022: go.nasa.gov/3YbKyBS
#NASA

The team identified every single tree in over 326,000 satellite images, using artificial intelligence algorithms. Measuring trees in the field allowed the scientists to relate the satellite data to how much carbon was stored in individual trees.
#NASAEarth

The team found there are far more trees in semi-arid regions of Africa than previously thought. But those trees store less carbon than some models predicted.

They estimate roughly 0.84 petagrams of carbon are locked up in African drylands.
(1 Pg = 1 billion metric tons)
#NASAEarth

in reply to NASA

But what is the prognosis about how many trees will there be in five, ten, twenty years? Are they increasing in number, are they spreading, or is the desert claiming more and more land?

The data are publicly available with a viewer app developed by the team. #OpenScience

The app identifies individual trees in satellite imagery and shows the amount of carbon they contain.
