The exoplanet GJ 1252 b is 65 light-years away, and has a scorching dayside temperature estimated to reach 2,242 degrees Fahrenheit (1228 degrees Celsius). In fact, GJ 1252 b is so hot that gold, silver, and copper would all melt on the planet. go.nasa.gov/422EHBX

Four CubeSats, one mission: to study tropical cyclones, like hurricanes. 🌀🌧️

NASA’s TROPICS mission is a constellation of small satellites, with the first of two launches scheduled for April 30, 2023.

Here are four things to know about TROPICS 👇
#NASAEarth

TROPICS will help scientists understand how tropical cyclones form and develop.

The satellites will collect information about a storm’s precipitation, temperature, and humidity – all important factors for the strength and longevity of a storm.
#NASAEarth

TROPICS will orbit Earth in two planes, collecting data on these storms nearly every hour and improving weather forecasts.

Current satellites provide information about a given storm about every six hours.
#NASAEarth

The TROPICS Pathfinder – a satellite designed to test the technology, communications systems, and data processing ahead of the full constellation – successfully launched on June 30, 2021. go.nasa.gov/41Prmg0
#NASAEarth

The first constellation launch is scheduled for Sunday, April 30 NET 9 p.m. EDT from New Zealand. The second launch is targeted for Tuesday, May 16 EDT.

Galaxy clusters are among the largest objects in the universe!

Studying them helps us learn more about the distribution of mysterious dark matter, which makes up most of a galaxy cluster's mass.

Canadarm, meet Canadarm2 🤝

#OTD in 2001, the @Space_Station's newly installed Canadarm2 transferred its launch cradle to Space Shuttle Endeavour's Canadarm, performing a "handshake" in space. @csa_asc astronaut Chris Hadfield was at the STS-100 shuttle's Canadarm controls.

Today's spacewalk is officially underway! The two astronauts have switched their spacesuits to battery power. Steve Bowen of @NASA_Astronauts and @Astro_Alneyadi will route power cables to prepare for future power system upgrades outside the @Space_Station.

I always get nervous when they do these---too many space disaster movies, I suppose--but I know the thousands of hours of training they do, so I feel confident for them!

Scientists at @nasa teamed up with the @forestservice to create the first-ever inventory of mature, old-growth forests in the U.S.

This visualization shows vegetation height across the U.S. (shown in green, with lighter color indicating taller trees). go.nasa.gov/3oLcvVg

in reply to NASA

Would have been nice if you had smoothed the data before adding the 3d effect. Makes it look like vegetation in the US is bisected by diagonal stripes.

Forests do a lot for us , from cleaning our air and water to providing nature and beauty. #ArborDay 🌲🌳

America’s forests also absorb over 10% of annual greenhouse gas emissions, and old-growth forests generally store more carbon than younger forests. go.nasa.gov/3oLcvVg
