Charles Boycott: The Man Who Became a Verb

The act of boycotting an organization or a person dates back to centuries, but the word โ€œboycottโ€ itself is relatively new. It entered English usage only in 1880 after a highly publicized campaign to ostracize a certain English land agent gained wide coverage in the British press. His name was Charles Cunningham Boycott.

Libertarians believe people should be free to live their life however they want, except for women. Study finds libertarians less likely to support women's abortion rights and more likely to support men's right to deny partner's abortions.

Now dlvr.it is supporting Mastodon!

* When one prominent developer supports the Fediverse, it is an anomaly
* When two prominent developers supports the Fediverse, it is a trend
* When three or more developers support the Fediverse, it's a movement

This movement continues to grow as the app ecosystem grows fast and furious.

in reply to Chris Trottier

To be blunt, if you're a social media app developer and the Fediverse is *not* on your radar, you're at risk of being left in the dust as the entire social media landscape changes.

Published Science. Symbiosis in beetles

#Bostrichidae #beetles have two #symbionts with important functions. One encodes the pathways to produce tyrosine precursors and is presumably involved in #cuticle and #exoskeleton formation. The second recycles urea, synthesizes lysine, and is strictly #evolving with its host. These types of "dual symbioses" have only been described in sap-feeding #Hemiptera.

In #politics, consensus doesnโ€™t require that information is correct or understood. Policymakers may even find that turning to experts for guidance doesnโ€™t serve their needs or interests.

And even when they look for accurate data, theyโ€™re likely to disagree about what comprises expertise & evidence. After all, every DC think tank claims to deliver โ€œthe factsโ€ in white papers & briefing materials, yet their conclusions rarely align. sheril.substack.com/p/do-factsโ€ฆ

TL/DR: Facts aren't enough.

Hmmโ€ฆmaybe patience and access are key. Building trust would be crucial too. Not impossible I would think. Pick your first audience and itโ€™s message with great care.

TIL that most countertop microwaves sold in the US are made by a company called Midea and then essentially branded and sold by the likes of Toshiba, GE, Black+Decker, Whirlpool, Sharp, etc. nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviewsโ€ฆ
in reply to kottke.org

About 5 years ago I learned that almost all non-commercial lawn mowers sold in the US are made by one company, MTD, in Mexico.

I recently learned something similar about HVAC units. The factory even ships multiple brand/logo plates in the same box. Installer applies the plate according whichever one the customer thought they paid for.
