Still wondering why your Twitter posts have alt text but your Mastodon posts don't. Many blind social media users have moved over to Mastodon because of usability concerns.

Someone reported esmail.xyz/RWuD71 and after looking into it, it turned out to be a pornhub link so I deleted it. Keep reporting people 👍

@Katherine Bond You are well prepared for when the toilet paper runs out! XD

So, Mastodon.social had a security breach and all private and follower-only messages were openly available.

This should serve as a reminder that DMs here are in no way private or secure.

Kinda a big deal

in reply to Sören

@chucker @reneestephen User archive takeouts are deleted after 7 days. Yes, we did rely on high-entropy randomly generated filenames to secure access, which normally would not be a problem with a correctly configured bucket policy.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @chucker @reneestephen I hadn’t seen it mentioned elsewhere, so I posted the screenshot from my email.

It happens to everyone, and I have no doubt that you’ve tightened things up. I’m glad that it wows found and fixed.

The DMs thing is the only concerning part to me.

Ridiculous.

There are good reasons to force the divestiture of TikTok from ByteDance — but it could come at a very high cost, especially if China won't agree to a sale.

I tried to sort through my very mixed feelings:

Recent volcanic activity has been observed on Venus for the first time.

Scientists made the discovery by poring over archival radar images of Earth’s twin taken in the '90s by our Magellan mission. Our VERITAS mission is set to investigate: go.nasa.gov/3mP5f9O

We've confirmed 5,000+ exoplanets. These include planets covered by lava seas, jewels blowing in alien winds and worlds with burned atmospheres darker than night. We also know of planets where we think the skies sparkle ✨ Each is a wonder! Exoplanets.nasa.gov

Because bandcamp is so important to the future of music, so are its workers' efforts to form a union. Bandcamp in general has been fair & equitable to artists, let's support efforts to make it the same for workers

Twitter just made bookmarks public.

Which makes me wonder: what's the point of likes -- especially now that both likes and bookmarks are public?

Thankfully, Mastodon bookmarks are *still* private.

twitter.com/TwitterSupport/sta…

in reply to Chris Trottier

It's a full circle to favourites. Favourites were originally social bookmarks (think del.icio.us). You save something for later, but the author gets notified.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron we should not underestimate this "social" function as the favorite thingy has direct access to the endorphine center cc/ @nitot

So whatever birdsite does, the distinction between favorites and bookmarks is essential, because favorites are also a messenger.

Please let me know your thoughts if you end up watching it.

The whole of Andy Warfield's talk "Building and Operating a Pretty Big Storage System (My Adventures in Amazon S3)" is great, but this bit about the economics of multi-tenant storage systems is super important: youtu.be/sc3J4McebHE?t=1282

This is the fundamental way that multi-tenant cloud economics differs from traditional systems, and possibly the single most important thing about the cloud.

Comet me, bro!
